A Puerto Rican ex-con pledges to stay away from his former drug dealing ways but finds him being dragged back by his past connections and the naive machinations of his lawyer and best friend. Donnie Brasco
This true story follows FBI agent Joe Pistone as he infiltrates the mafia of New York. Befriending Lefty Ruggiero, Pistone (under the name Donnie Brasco) is able to embed himself in a mafia faction lead by Sonny Black. Ruggiero and Pistone become tight as the group goes about collecting money for ‘the bosses’. Eventually, the group become big time when Black himself becomes a boss, all the while Pistone collects evidence. However, the trials and tribulations of the undercover work become more than Pistone can bear. His marriage falls apart and to top it off, the mafia suspect a mole in the organization. The real dilemma is afforded to Pistone, who knows if he walks away from the mafia, Ruggiero will be the one punished.

Once upon a time in America
Epic, episodic, tale of the lives of a small group of New York City Jewish gangsters spanning over 40 years. Told mostly in flashbacks and flash-forwards, the movie centres on small-time hood David ‘Noodles’ Aaronson and his lifelong partners in crime; Max, Cockeye and Patsy and their friends from growing up in the rough Jewish neighbourhood of New York’s Lower East Side in the 1920s, to the last years of Prohibition in the early 1930s, and then to the late 1960s where an elderly Noodles returns to New York after many years in hiding to look into the past.

The untouchables
Federal agent Elliot Ness assembles a personal team of mob fighters to bring Chicago crime boss Al Capone to justice using unconventional means during the mob wars of the 1920s. This fictionalized account of the arrest of Al Capone is heavy on style and gunfire. The end shootout combines a baby carriage and stairs with a nod to Eisenstein’s The Battleship Potemkin

Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a young cop looking to make a name for him in the world of law enforcement. Collin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is a street-smart criminal who has successfully infiltrated the police department with the sole intention of reporting their every move to ruthless syndicate head Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). When Costigan is assigned the task of working his way into Costello’s tightly guarded inner circle, Sullivan is faced with the responsibility of rooting out the informer before things get out of hand. The kebabs of Lucknow

KebabKebabs from Lucknow are the crowning glory both of Awadhi and Indian cuisine, having primarily originated from the city of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, a state in Northern India. The technique in the preparation of a Kebab here was basically influenced by Mughal cooking.

Initially, Kebab was a Persian term used to describe a wide variety of meat preparations. But Lucknow gave the word a new meaning, and from just being pounded meat cooked over a slow fire, Lucknawi Kebabs became works of art.

The way Kebabs are prepared here in Lucknow, also differ from anywhere else in India. If you walk into a restaurant and see ‘Tandoori Kebab’ written in the menu, it would immediately hint at the fact, that it isn’t a preparation native to Lucknow. Unlike in Punjab where a Tandoor is used in the preparation of a Kebab, in Lucknow an open stove fuelled by wood is used instead, it’s colloquially called a ‘chula’. A gourmand would go so far as to argue, that it’s this technique of making a Kebab on an open stove, which gives it a very distinct taste and aroma.

In Lucknow, there are numerous restaurants, each well known for a particular preparation like the Biryani or Kulcha etc. Similarly, if it’s some authentic Lucknawi Kebabs you are planning to sink your teeth into, an eatery called the ‘Tunday Kababi’ is the place to be. Known for their Tunday Kebabs, something made obvious by their name, and for their Galavati Kebabs, only once you have let their Kebabs melt in your mouth like butter, will you know their true pedigree, which is about 100 years old by the way.

If there is one legacy you can thank the Nawabs who ruled Lucknow for, it would surely have to be for introducing the world to their version of culinary art, through the masterpieces called the Kebabs.
